What is Warranty Cover?

Today’s savvy motorists are turning to warranty cover as one of the most effective ways to ensure peace of mind should their car break down due to electrical or mechanical failure. While all manufacturers of new cars offer some kind of warranty to cover the cost of repairs should things go awry, this is not always the case when buying second hand.

Once a car is over three years old then most manufacturer guarantees have run out. Statistics show that almost one third of cars between four and nine years old break down at some point. Therefore, it makes sense to take out some kind of protection which covers those often hefty repair bills.

Considering the typical cost of gearbox is over £850 and a clutch assembly £400, while buying a car warranty could cost as little as £170 per year then it doesn’t take a mathematical genius to know that it also makes financial sense.

Motorists are shopping around and doing research online to ensure they get the best car warranty available for the most affordable price. With a large variety of options available, from manufacturers and dealers extended car warranty (which basically lengthens the industry standard cover of three years) to specialist companies offering specific cover, such as wear and tear it is more important than ever to know what deals are out there and how to get them.

Into the Void
Many drivers are unaware that it is possible to void a warranty, only realising that their cover is worthless when they come to make a claim. In some cases not all types of repair are covered, so it is worth reading the small print.

A car warranty, whether for a new car or a second-hand one, is dependent on both sides keeping their part of the bargain. Therefore a car owner is expected to keep the vehicle reasonably maintained, to avoid using it for racing or crime, not to modify its parts or to put oil in the petrol tank, battery acid in the cooling system and so on.

Warranty can also be voided if the car is a victim of a natural disaster such as a flood, or if the odometer has been tinkered with. If the car has been in a serious accident and has been written off or given a salvage title this too can affect the cover.
