Why Are Extended Car Warranties such a Good Idea

The average warranty on a new car offered by vehicle manufacturers is generally 60,000 miles or three years. But what happens once that time period or mileage is up? To avoid having to pay from their own pockets if the car has a mechanical or electrical problem, it makes financial sense for motorists to look into extended car warranties.

Why extend the warranty at all? Isn’t it simply a waste of money that could be spent elsewhere? Research has shown that almost half of motorists who opt for warranty cover actually go on to make a claim. Bearing in mind the average cost of a repair is around £350 and often much more, while buying a car warranty can be half that amount, then the premium could soon pay for itself.

Meanwhile, owners of second-hand cars which are out of warranty are statistically more likely to have some kind of problem with their vehicles and therefore more likely to benefit from extended car warranties.

Perhaps even more important for drivers than the obvious financial advantages is the feeling of peace of mind that having this kind of insurance gives. Knowing that if something goes wrong with the car there will be no massive costs involved is a load off the already sagging shoulders of the beleaguered motorist.

Ways to Extend

Most manufacturers and dealers offer the option of an extension once the warranty cover has expired. However this is not the only way that car warranty can be extended.

If buying a new car then it’s worth looking at the deals offered by different manufacturers. Motorists who are flexible regarding the make and model of car they buy may find that shopping around pays dividends if extended cover is built in as part of the purchase. For example, Hyundai regularly offers deals which exceed the three-year standard by at least a couple of years, while Vauxhall are currently promoting a warranty which “lasts a lifetime” – their definition of this being 100,000 miles.

When looking at this kind of deal on a brand new car it is worthwhile examining the small print to make sure that the extended car warranties being offered really are as good as they appear.

For owners of second hand cars already out of warranty then the car dealer may offer a warranty extension option. If not, motorists can get in touch with one of the many specialist companies dealing with this kind of cover.
